We are very concern with 1 of 3 parakeets we have in the house. We been having this one bird for over 5 years and the other 5 died. 2 of it died from winter cold, 1 died of tumor, 1 died because of fight, 1 of egg twisted. We continue to have this only bird alive and got other 2 to live with it. The concern situation is that the only bird alive is swelling on the bottom part and its getting bigger and we don't know why is that happening. Please anyone who might know how to solve this situation contact me on my email (XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX). ill be glad if someone can help me with that. If you want i will be able to send a picture of the bird to show you with more details. Thanks

Hello. I don't think I need a picture to tell you what is wrong. I'm 99% sure you have another egg bound bird. As you already know, this is a life threatening emergency. It's cause by poor diet, including not nearly enough calcium in the diet. The tumors with the other one is also a diet deficiency. It sounds like you are not feeding your birds anything but seeds. If I'm right, you are, and have been, seeing the dangers and the end results of it. I can give you links to information about proper diet. However, your immediate concern is the egg bound birds. If something isn't done within the next few hours, you are going to lose another one. She needs to be seen by an experienced avian vet immediately. I can give you links to locate one if you don't already have one. While someone is on the phone telling them you have an emergency and that you need to come right in, there is one very long shot you can try. First off, handle her very carefully because you don't want to risk having that egg break inside of her. That's the same as a death sentence. Don't turn her upside down; hold her very gently, putting no pressure at all on her body; coat her vent area with olive oil or other cooking oil. Then confine her to a shallow dish of luke warm water, just deep enough to come about half way up her abdomen. If she has not passed that egg in 30 minutes of less, you need to be on your way to the vet. Egg binding is caused by egg shells that are too soft to pass. Soft eggshells are caused by not enough calcium in the diet. Birds should never, ever be allowed to run out of cuttlebone, especially female birds. However, they also need veggies, fruits and many other items in their diet. Seeds should not be more than about 20% of any bird's diet. Read up on all this information, after you get a vet located and get past this crisis. Best of luck with it and if you have more questions, let me know. Patricia
