Our new parakeet has black nostrils on his beak. Is this normal or is it ill? WE purchased it 2 weeks ago and today is the last day we could bring it back to Petco for treatment.

Reply to Chrys's Post: I think it is the cere part you mentioned. IT is one the band that will change color when the parakeet gets older. I have not been in the room much to observe many of the other signs you mentioned. This is the first bird we have had so I don't know much about them. What is the vent on the bird? He doesn't seem very active and he won't come out of the cage. He will perch on our fingers but won't stay on when we move him to the door. He seems to be eating, drinking and has normal droppings.
