I want to take my African Grey Parrot to Egypt with me, as I have a two year work contract. There seems to be a difference of opinion between the Consulate here and the shipping company in Cairo as to whether I can import him, because of the bird flu outbreaks in Egypt (last death, March 2008?). I am having difficulty finding out the correct position and as I fly out on 23rd I am beginning to panic! Do you know, or can you tell me where I can find the actual position, as to whether I can take my bird with me or whether I need to rehome him here?

Optional Information:
Age: 6; Male

Already Tried:
Egyptian Consulate tell me no problem, but contact where I am going say there is current government circular saying is, though might be able to try if I have a 'cities certificate'.

No, as I am there for at least 2 years, I hope, and was hoping to take him with me. He's obviously caged, and though sometimes comes out, has never been in contact with any wild bird/poultry in danger of having bird flu.

OK the reason I asked this is right now any bird coming back into this country from that area is looking at 30 days in an approved quarantine location of which there are only three. It would be down the road but you know best if you and the bird could handle that. You can read about the quarantine areas here
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/animals/return_pet_bird.shtml
No sense trying to take him if you couldn't get him back into the country!
I would ask the consulate about any paperwork required and have on hand health certificates including an international health certificate.
If you are going over there as an employee you may want the company you are going to work for to find out on their end if your bird can come into the area you will be working.
You can try the US based Egyptian consulate offices
http://www.egy2000.com/missionsl.htm
Or you could try contacting the US Embassy in Egypt
http://cairo.usembassy.gov/
they may be able to connect you to the right people to give you the information you need or the info on obtaining the right certificates.
Hope this helps you!

Part of the problem is that I have already contacted the Egyptian Consulate - they are a bit brief, they tell me there is no problem, I just need vet certificates, and to get them legalised by the FCO and themselves. But then the school I will be working for have contacted a shipping company who tell them that I will have problems bringing him in because of bird flu, and there is apparently a government circular stopping the import of birds, although they say I might be able to get him in with a 'cities certificate' - do you know what this is? Also, what is an international health certificate, and would my vet be able to provide one?
